We have been using reloadable cards for quite awhile now and for many different reasons. There are the prepaid phone cards, gift cards and debit cards. One reloadable card that many businesses are using these days as a means to offer direct deposit to all its employees are payroll cards. They are similar to prepaid debit cards in that they hold a set amount of money that the consumer then can use like a credit card. The reason business are taking advantage of this is for their employees who do not have access to a regular bank account, although people with a bank account can benefit from the cards as well.

The company doesn’t have to spend as much money creating, printing and distributing checks, while the employee doesn’t have to worry about finding time to go to the bank each week. Payroll cards are a way they can participate in direct deposit. An account is set up and their weekly pay is deposited into that account. They have access to these funds by using a personal identification number to load the funds onto the card.

Not only does this allow people to participate in direct deposit, it also allows them to participate in the electronic credit card world. They are able to use payroll cards exactly the same way as they would credit cards, so they are able to make purchases they would have had to do using cash in the past. In addition, many places do not accept cash anymore, so these people cannot shop there without their payroll cards.

Payroll cards aren’t just for people who don’t have a bank account. Many businesses offer them to their employees who already participate in direct deposit. This gives the employees a more secure way to make purchases because they don’t have to worry about their identity being stolen. Payroll cards can be expensive for businesses to get started. In many cases, they will find it only is worth using if a large number of employees take advantage of them. It always is a good idea to do research within your company to see how well-received they will be.
