An online debit card works much the same way as an offline card would. It allows you to purchase items online and offers authorization in an electronic manner, usually through a PIN number or the card’s CVV2 code. The CVV2 code is the 3 digit number on the back of the card, next to the signature panel. The online debit card is usually offered as an extension of the offline debit card, but can be issued separately for those users who can’t get approval for an offline debit card. The only difference is in the way that the card is used, and that it basically becomes like a glorified ATM card. When issued on its own, it is usually a prepaid card that the card holder has to load as needed.
By allowing people to use an online debit card that is prepaid, it makes people have more options for buying the things that they need. Those who were before unable to get a traditional debit or credit card can now shop online, for example, and don’t have to worry about always having cash on hand or paying for things with money orders. Depending on the exact card that you get, some of them charge loading fees and usage fees, but there are many online debit card providers that offer the cards free of charge to their users.
If you’re getting an online debit card instead of a traditional one, it’s important that you understand how it works. Without a PIN number or an attachment to an offline debit card, it might be more complicated to find stores that will take the card in the first place. However, as long as you get an online debit card that comes with a PIN number, you can use it anywhere that debit cards are accepted.
You won’t be able to do like some people do with checking accounts and use the card as a credit, because it will not authenticate as a credit card. You can only use it as a debit, which makes it a little more hassle than some people might like. However, if you’re trying to budget money with a prepaid online debit card, or just can’t find approval for any other type of card, you might be willing to accept a few disadvantages in exchange for everything that the card CAN do. The use of an online debit card is not new, but is a topic that many people don’t know a lot about, so hopefully you’re more knowledgeable and better able to pick the right card for your needs
